Advance care directive

In Switzerland, the advance care directive allows an adult with capacity to appoint one or more persons to handle personal care, asset management and legal representation if they later become incapable of judgement. It strengthens self-determination and can reduce the need for official adult protection measures. Formal requirements are important, and the document should be clear about tasks, substitutes and remuneration. When incapacity occurs, the competent authority verifies validity and suitability before the mandate takes effect.
