Asylum seeker status
Asylum seeker status covers the legal position of a person who has applied for protection and awaits a decision on refugee status or removal.
In Switzerland, an asylum seeker is a person whose asylum application is pending before the competent federal authorities. The status affects accommodation, identity documents, access to work, social assistance, schooling for children, health care and possible transfer or removal measures. It does not itself confer refugee status; that depends on the outcome of the procedure. Comparative asylum law distinguishes this temporary procedural position from recognised refugee status, temporary admission and other residence rights.
