Border control

Border control comprises checks at national borders and external Schengen borders to regulate entry, exit, security and migration compliance.

Border control covers identity, document, visa, customs-adjacent and security checks used to decide whether a person or goods may cross a frontier. Switzerland participates in the Schengen area, so routine personal checks at internal Schengen borders are generally absent, while external border rules, police measures and temporary controls may still matter. Border control must respect asylum access, non-refoulement, data protection and proportionality. In practice it intersects with carrier duties, entry bans, visas, customs enforcement and cross-border policing.
