Civil status

Civil status is the official record of core personal-law facts. In Switzerland, civil status authorities register events such as birth, parentage, marriage, registered partnership, name changes, sex markers and death. These entries prove legal identity and support family, inheritance, migration and administrative procedures. Civil status records have strong evidentiary value but can be corrected when they are inaccurate or when later legal changes occur. International situations often require recognition or transcription of foreign civil-status documents.
