Cross-border commuter permit

A cross-border commuter permit allows a foreign resident of a neighbouring region to work in Switzerland while living abroad.

The Swiss cross-border commuter permit, commonly the G permit, is for persons who live outside Switzerland and work in Switzerland. It is most relevant for residents of neighbouring countries who return regularly to their foreign residence. EU/EFTA nationals benefit from the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons, while third-country nationals face stricter conditions, including residence in a border zone and labour market checks. The permit concerns employment authorisation rather than ordinary Swiss residence. Taxation, social security, remote work, and weekly return requirements often require separate assessment under Swiss and international rules.
