Daily allowance

A daily allowance is a periodic cash benefit, usually paid per day, replacing income during temporary loss of work capacity or insured absence.

Daily allowances are common in Swiss social insurance and related private insurance. They compensate a temporary loss of income, for example during illness, accident, maternity, unemployment, military service or rehabilitation measures, depending on the scheme. Entitlement usually depends on insured status, qualifying periods, medical incapacity or another statutory event, and coordination with salary continuation or other benefits. The amount is often calculated as a percentage of insured earnings and paid for a limited duration. Daily allowances differ from pensions, which address longer-term risks.
