Employment reference
An employment reference records work performed and conduct, helping employees document their career and qualifications.
In Switzerland, employees are entitled to a reference at the end of employment and may request an interim reference during employment. A full reference normally describes the type and duration of work, performance, and conduct; a simple confirmation is limited to role and dates. The reference must be truthful, complete, clear, and benevolent within the limits of truth. Disputes often concern coded language, omissions, or negative assessments that affect future job prospects.
