Export restrictions (art)
Export restrictions on art control the cross-border movement of cultural objects to prevent illicit trafficking and preserve heritage of significant cultural value.
Export restrictions may require declarations, permits or prohibitions for artworks, antiquities and other cultural objects. Switzerland applies controls shaped by its cultural property legislation, customs practice and international cooperation, especially where objects are inventoried, protected or originate from states with specific agreements. Restrictions affect dealers, collectors, museums, carriers and insurers. A lawful sale does not automatically make export lawful, and a foreign export breach may affect import, title risk and marketability. Due diligence should verify origin, age, category, documentation and any source-country controls before shipment.
