Free movement of persons

Free movement of persons allows EU citizens to move, reside and work across Member States; Switzerland applies related rules through bilateral arrangements.

Free movement of persons in EU law allows citizens and certain family members to enter, reside, work, study or seek work in other Member States, subject to conditions and public-interest limits. It includes non-discrimination on nationality in many employment and social contexts. Switzerland is not an EU Member State, but it has a major bilateral framework with the EU on movement of persons. Swiss residence, labour-market and social-security consequences therefore depend on that framework and domestic implementing rules.
