Freedom of the press
Freedom of the press is a specific expression of media and communication freedom. It protects the gathering, editing and dissemination of information and opinions through newspapers, online media and comparable journalistic formats. In Switzerland it supports democratic debate and scrutiny of authorities, while coexisting with personality rights, data protection, criminal law and rules on fair elections. Prior censorship is particularly suspect. Restrictions require a legal basis, public interest and proportionality, with strong protection for reporting on matters of public concern.
