Graduated rent

A graduated rent arrangement fixes rent steps in advance, so the rent rises by agreed amounts or to agreed levels on specified dates. In Swiss tenancy law, such clauses are subject to protective requirements and are mainly relevant in leases with a sufficient fixed duration. They must be transparent so the tenant can foresee the financial burden. Graduated rent differs from indexed rent, where the amount depends on an external price index. If requirements are not met, a rent step may be challengeable.
