Income tax

Income tax is a recurring tax on income earned by individuals, levied in Switzerland by the Confederation, cantons, and communes.

Swiss income tax applies to individuals on taxable income such as employment income, self-employment profits, pensions, investment income and certain other receipts, after permitted deductions. It is levied at federal, cantonal and communal levels, with progressive rates in many cases and substantial cantonal differences. Residence or tax domicile generally leads to taxation of worldwide income, while non-residents may be taxed on Swiss-source income through limited tax liability or withholding mechanisms. Capital gains on private movable assets are often treated differently from ordinary income.
