Invalidity

Invalidity is a likely permanent or long-lasting incapacity to earn resulting from a physical, mental or psychological impairment.

Invalidity in Swiss social insurance is not identical with diagnosis or disability in everyday language. It requires a health impairment and a resulting incapacity to earn, or in some contexts incapacity to perform usual tasks, that is expected to be permanent or long-lasting. The assessment combines medical findings with legal and economic evaluation. It is central to disability insurance, occupational benefits and accident or military insurance coordination. The degree of invalidity often determines whether and to what extent a pension is payable.
