Legal aid
Legal aid allows a person lacking sufficient means to pursue or defend rights without prohibitive court and lawyer costs.
In Switzerland, legal aid protects access to justice for persons who cannot afford proceedings. It may cover court advances and costs and, where necessary, the appointment of a lawyer. Applicants generally must show insufficient financial means and that the case is not hopeless; the precise assessment depends on the procedure and circumstances. Legal aid does not guarantee success and may be withdrawn if conditions change. In some situations, amounts advanced by the state may have to be repaid later if the person’s financial position improves.
