Mandatory reporting

Mandatory reporting in health law is an exception to ordinary confidentiality. Swiss rules may require or permit reports to public-health authorities, child and adult protection bodies, police or supervisory agencies, depending on the matter and canton. Typical examples include certain communicable diseases, serious threats to vulnerable persons, unusual deaths or professional misconduct. The scope, timing and recipient of a report must be checked carefully. Reporting only what is necessary helps reconcile legal duties with patient privacy and medical secrecy.
