Medical secrecy

Medical secrecy protects patient information obtained in care and limits disclosure without consent or a legal basis.

Medical secrecy is a core Swiss professional and criminal-law duty for physicians and many health professionals, including auxiliary staff. It covers diagnoses, treatment, personal circumstances and even the fact of treatment. Disclosure is generally allowed only with patient consent, a statutory reporting duty or permission from the competent authority where required. The duty continues after treatment and death. It supports trust in care but must be balanced with child protection, public health, insurance procedures and court or supervisory obligations.
