Monetary penalty
A monetary penalty is a criminal sentence calculated in daily penalty units, reflecting both culpability and the offender’s finances.
The Swiss monetary penalty is imposed in daily penalty units. The number of units reflects the seriousness of the offence and culpability; the amount per unit reflects the offender’s personal and financial circumstances. It is used mainly for less serious offences and may be suspended or unsuspended depending on the statutory conditions and prognosis. It differs from a fine, which is typically used for contraventions. Non-payment can lead to enforcement measures or substitute custodial consequences under legal conditions.
