Monument protection
Legal protection of buildings, sites or objects of historical, architectural, artistic or cultural significance.
Monument protection preserves cultural heritage by identifying, listing and regulating significant buildings, ensembles, archaeological remains or objects. In Switzerland, primary responsibility lies with cantons and communes, while federal interests may arise for objects of national importance or federally funded projects. Protection can restrict demolition, alteration, materials, appearance and surroundings, and may require specialist review in the building permit process. Owners may face maintenance duties but can sometimes receive advice or subsidies. Decisions must balance heritage value with property rights, usability, safety and other public interests.
