Net neutrality

Net neutrality is the principle that internet access providers should treat traffic without unjustified blocking, throttling or discrimination.

Net neutrality protects open access to online services and limits discriminatory treatment of data traffic by internet access providers. Swiss telecom regulation and market practice address transparency, traffic management and customer information, while comparative EU rules influence expectations for cross-border providers. Permitted network management may include security, congestion control or compliance with law, but must be proportionate and transparent. Legal disputes often concern zero-rating, prioritisation, specialised services and misleading advertising. The concept balances innovation, consumer choice, infrastructure investment and freedom of communication.
