Noise abatement

Noise abatement law aims to protect people from excessive exposure while allowing necessary infrastructure and economic activity. In Switzerland it relies on prevention at the source, planning coordination, emission limits, exposure thresholds and remediation of existing installations where required. Common sources include roads, railways, airports, industrial plants, shooting ranges, nightlife and construction sites. Measures may include quieter technology, operating restrictions, barriers, insulation, zoning or traffic management. Disputes often turn on measurement methods, sensitive uses such as housing or schools, proportionality and who bears remediation costs.
