Occupational disease

An occupational disease is an illness caused predominantly by work conditions and may be covered by accident insurance.

In Switzerland, certain diseases are treated similarly to occupational accidents when they are caused by harmful substances or specific work activities. Other illnesses may qualify if work is the predominant cause under the applicable insurance rules. Recognition matters for medical costs, daily allowances, pensions, prevention measures, and employer obligations. Evidence can be complex, especially for gradual exposures such as chemicals, noise, repetitive strain, or psychosocial factors. Employers must assess risks and take suitable health protection measures.
