Paternity

Under Swiss law, paternity may arise by marriage to the mother, recognition by the father, or a court judgment, including where biological parentage is disputed. Establishing or contesting paternity affects child maintenance, parental responsibilities, citizenship or residence issues in some cases, inheritance, and the child’s right to know their origins. Genetic evidence can be relevant, but procedures protect personal rights and the child’s welfare. Time limits and standing to sue are important and differ from informal family arrangements.
