Peremption

Peremption refers to strict time limits after which a right, power or procedural option is lost. In Swiss legal usage it is often contrasted with prescription: a peremptory period usually extinguishes the right itself and may have to be considered by authorities without a party’s objection. Such periods protect legal certainty where relationships must be clarified quickly, for example in challenges, notices or elections. Because effects are severe, classification depends on the applicable rule’s wording, purpose and system rather than on terminology alone.
