Right of petition

The right of petition allows anyone to address requests, proposals or complaints to public authorities without suffering disadvantages for doing so.

The right of petition is a fundamental political communication right. In Switzerland, it allows individuals and groups, regardless of citizenship, to submit written requests, proposals or complaints to authorities. The authority must take note of the petition, but the right normally does not create an entitlement to a specific decision or substantive reply. It protects access to public institutions and the freedom to raise grievances. It differs from initiatives and referendums, which have stricter formal requirements and legal effects.
