Private school authorization

Private school authorization is the cantonal approval or supervision required for a private school to educate children, especially during compulsory schooling.

In Switzerland, private schools are regulated mainly by cantonal law. Authorization or recognition may be required where the school provides compulsory education, and authorities usually examine educational quality, curriculum equivalence, qualified staff, child protection, premises, governance and financial reliability. Private schools may have pedagogical, religious or linguistic profiles, but must respect fundamental rights and minimum educational standards. Supervision can include reporting duties, inspections and withdrawal of authorization if requirements are no longer met. Rules differ significantly between cantons.
