Refugee status

Swiss law follows the core international idea of refugee protection: a person may be recognized as a refugee if they face serious disadvantages or a well-founded fear of persecution linked to grounds such as race, religion, nationality, social group, or political opinion. Recognition does not always automatically mean asylum, because exclusion grounds or conduct after departure may affect the outcome. Refugee status is important for residence, family reunification, travel documents, and protection against refoulement. It requires an individual assessment of credibility, risk, and country conditions.
