Acquisition of land by persons abroad

The acquisition of land by persons abroad is regulated in Switzerland to limit foreign acquisition of certain real estate, especially residential property not used as a main residence. Commonly known as the Lex Koller regime, it distinguishes between categories of buyers, property types and intended use. Some acquisitions require authorisation; others are exempt, for example certain commercial premises. The rules apply not only to direct purchases but also to economically equivalent structures.
