Child protection measures

Child protection measures are official interventions ordered when a child’s welfare is endangered and parental help is insufficient.

In Switzerland, child protection measures are taken by the child and adult protection authority or, in some proceedings, by a court. They respond to risks such as neglect, violence, serious conflict, addiction or inability to provide adequate care. Measures must be proportionate and may range from instructions and supervision to appointment of a curator, limits on parental authority, placement outside the home or withdrawal of custody. The aim is not punishment of parents, but safeguarding the child and supporting workable care.
