Child welfare

Child welfare is the guiding standard requiring decisions about children to protect their development, safety, relationships and dignity.

Child welfare, often expressed as the best interests of the child, is the central criterion in Swiss family and child protection law. It guides parental decisions, court orders, contact arrangements, relocation questions and protective interventions. The concept covers physical and psychological safety, stable care, education, emotional bonds, identity and the child’s own views. It is not identical with parental wishes or administrative convenience. Authorities must assess the concrete child’s situation and choose proportionate measures.
