Cooling-off period

A cooling-off period lets a consumer withdraw from certain contracts within a limited time without proving fault or breach.

A cooling-off period gives consumers time to reconsider specific transactions, especially where pressure, distance or information asymmetry may affect consent. During the period, withdrawal normally ends the contract without needing to show a defect, though return duties and payment for services already used may apply. Swiss law grants withdrawal rights only for certain situations, not as a universal rule for all online or retail purchases. Businesses should state the applicable right, deadline, form of notice and consequences clearly.
