Final decision

A decision that ends the proceedings for the parties or claims concerned and is normally appealable to the Federal Supreme Court.

A final decision disposes of the matter before the lower authority, either for all claims and parties or for a separable part treated as finally resolved. In Swiss Federal Supreme Court procedure, final decisions are the normal object of an appeal, provided the other admissibility requirements are met. The classification matters because interim and preliminary decisions are appealable only under stricter conditions. A decision’s label is not decisive; what matters is whether it definitively closes the proceedings on the relevant subject.
