Freedom of assembly
The right to gather peacefully in public or private spaces to express opinions, protest, commemorate, or pursue shared interests.
Freedom of assembly protects peaceful gatherings, including demonstrations, vigils, meetings and marches. In Switzerland it is recognised as a fundamental right and is also protected by European and international human rights standards. Authorities may require permits for use of public space and may impose proportionate conditions to protect safety, traffic or the rights of others. Restrictions must have a legal basis, pursue a legitimate aim and remain necessary and proportionate; the mere unpopularity of a message is not enough.
