Freedom of association
The right to form, join, manage, or leave associations, including political parties, unions, NGOs, and other collective organisations.
Freedom of association protects collective organisation for political, social, cultural, professional or other lawful purposes. It includes the right to create associations, join them voluntarily, participate in their activities and, in general, not be compelled to belong. In Switzerland it underpins civil society, political parties, trade unions and many private-law associations. Interference may be justified only on a legal basis and for legitimate public interests, such as public safety or protection of others’ rights, and must be proportionate.
