Grid access

The right and conditions for producers, suppliers and consumers to connect to and use electricity or gas networks on regulated terms.

Grid access determines who may connect to energy networks, how capacity is allocated, and what tariffs, technical standards and balancing obligations apply. It is central to competition because networks are natural monopolies and must usually provide transparent, non-discriminatory access. In Switzerland, electricity grid access is influenced by market-opening rules, regulated network tariffs, system operation and the duties of distribution and transmission operators. Disputes often concern connection costs, priority for renewable generation, curtailment, metering data and access for large consumers. Comparative law distinguishes negotiated, regulated and third-party access models.
