Involuntary commitment

Involuntary commitment allows compulsory placement for serious mental disorder or vulnerability when necessary care cannot otherwise be provided.

In Swiss adult protection law, involuntary commitment is a serious interference with personal liberty and is allowed only under strict conditions. It may be ordered for mental disorder, intellectual disability or severe neglect where necessary treatment or care cannot be provided less intrusively. The measure must be proportionate, reviewed and subject to appeal. The person has rights to be heard, informed, represented and treated with dignity. Separate rules govern coercive treatment and restraint, which require additional justification and documentation.
