Licensing

Licensing is the administrative authorisation of an activity, profession, use, or operation that is otherwise restricted by law.

Licensing allows a public authority to control activities that require prior approval, such as regulated professions, construction, transport, trade, environmental uses, or financial services. A licence may confirm that statutory conditions are met and may impose conditions, time limits, reporting duties, or supervision. In Switzerland, licensing occurs at federal, cantonal, and communal levels depending on the field. It must respect legality, equality, proportionality, and economic freedom where relevant. Refusal, suspension, or withdrawal is usually subject to procedural safeguards and review.
