Loss of support

Loss of support concerns the economic harm suffered by persons who were maintained, or could reasonably expect to be maintained, by a deceased victim. In Swiss tort law, the assessment looks at the support likely to have been provided, the beneficiary’s needs, the deceased’s income and prospects, and the probable duration of support. It is distinct from funeral costs and from non-pecuniary satisfaction. Future support is necessarily estimated, often with actuarial assumptions and adjustments for contingencies.
