Mediation
Mediation is a confidential, voluntary process in which a neutral mediator helps parties negotiate their own settlement instead of imposing a decision.
Mediation is used in Switzerland in family, employment, neighbourhood, commercial and public-law contexts. Unlike a judge or arbitrator, the mediator does not decide the dispute but structures communication, identifies interests and supports settlement options. The process is usually voluntary and confidential, though courts may encourage or refer parties to mediation where appropriate. Any result depends on party consent and normally becomes binding only through a settlement agreement, court approval or another enforceable legal form.
