Overtime

Overtime is work performed beyond the contractually agreed working hours and is normally compensated by pay or time off.

In Swiss employment law, overtime means work exceeding the agreed or customary working hours, distinct from statutory extra hours above maximum working time limits. Employees must perform overtime when necessary and reasonably acceptable, but the employer must respect health, rest and working-time rules. Compensation is usually through time off of equal duration or additional pay, unless a valid agreement modifies this within legal limits. Precise recording and clear approval practices matter. Senior employees or flexible salary arrangements require careful analysis, not automatic exclusion.
