Partially suspended sentence

A partially suspended sentence combines an immediately enforceable part of the penalty with a part suspended during probation.

A partially suspended sentence, known in Switzerland as a teilbedingte Strafe or peine partiellement avec sursis, sits between a fully suspended and an unconditional sentence. The court orders one part of the custodial or monetary penalty to be served or paid, while suspending the remainder for a probationary period. It is used when a complete suspension would be too lenient, but full execution is not necessary. Breach of probation may lead to enforcement of the suspended part.
