Private use exception

The private use exception permits limited use of protected works within personal, family or similarly close circles, subject to statutory limits.

The private use exception is a copyright limitation allowing individuals to use protected works without permission within a personal sphere, such as personal study, family use or closely connected private circles. Swiss law also recognizes certain internal uses in education and enterprises, but with limits and often linked to remuneration schemes. The exception does not generally authorize making works available to the public or commercial exploitation. Its scope is important for copying, downloading, cloud storage and classroom or workplace practices.
