Quotation right
The quotation right permits limited use of protected material for purposes such as explanation, reference or critique, if justified and attributed.
The quotation right is a copyright limitation allowing excerpts from protected works to be used without permission when the quotation serves a legitimate purpose, such as commentary, criticism, illustration or scholarly discussion. The quoted part must be proportionate to that purpose and normally identify the source and author where available. In Swiss practice, the quotation must be integrated into an independent presentation rather than replace the original work. The rule supports freedom of expression, research and debate while preserving the author’s economic interests.
