Real right
A property right that gives direct legal power over a thing and generally has effect against everyone, not only against a contractual party.
A real right is a right in rem: it relates directly to a thing and is enforceable against third parties. In Swiss property law, the main examples are ownership, limited real rights such as easements and usufruct, and security rights such as pledges or mortgages. Real rights differ from contractual claims, which bind only specific persons. Their creation and transfer usually require legally prescribed acts, such as possession transfer for movables or land-register entry for immovables. Publicity and legal certainty are central features.
