Relocation of child

Relocation of a child concerns a move that affects parental authority, care arrangements or contact with the other parent.

In Switzerland, a parent may not unilaterally decide every move with a child. If relocation significantly affects exercise of parental authority, care, schooling or contact with the other parent, consent of the other holder of parental authority or a decision by the competent authority or court may be required. The assessment focuses on the child’s welfare, not on punishing or rewarding a parent. Relevant factors include stability, reasons for the move, practical care arrangements, distance, language or school changes, and maintaining relationships.
