Revision in social insurance

Revision is the adjustment of a social insurance decision or benefit when legally relevant circumstances have materially changed.

In Swiss social insurance, revision allows a final benefit decision to be adapted for the future when important circumstances change, such as health, earning capacity, family status or income. It is especially significant for disability pensions and supplementary or means-tested benefits. Revision differs from reconsideration or procedural reopening, which address errors or new facts relating to the original decision. The insurer must establish a relevant change and reassess entitlement under the applicable rules. Benefits may be increased, reduced or terminated, usually prospectively and with procedural safeguards.
