School allocation
School allocation determines which public school or class a child attends, balancing residence, capacity, welfare, equality and integration needs.
School allocation in Switzerland is usually decided by municipal or cantonal school authorities under cantonal law. The normal criterion is residence within a school district, but capacity, class composition, language, special needs, siblings, transport and child welfare may matter. Parents may request a different placement, yet there is generally no unrestricted right to choose a public school. Allocation decisions must be lawful, non-arbitrary, proportionate and non-discriminatory. Where a decision seriously affects the child or family, written reasons and appeal rights may be important.
