School disciplinary measures

School disciplinary measures are sanctions or educational interventions used to maintain order while respecting pupils’ rights and proportionality.

Disciplinary measures in Swiss schools may include warnings, temporary removal from class, behavioural agreements, detention-like measures, exclusion from events or, in serious cases, temporary suspension. The legal basis is usually cantonal school law and local regulations. Measures must pursue a legitimate educational or safety purpose, be proportionate, non-discriminatory and adapted to the pupil’s age and situation. Before serious sanctions, pupils and parents normally have a right to be heard and to receive a reasoned decision with available appeal options.
