Student data protection

Student data protection governs how schools collect, use, share and secure pupils’ personal data, including grades, health and support records.

Student data protection in Switzerland involves federal and cantonal data protection rules, with public schools usually subject to cantonal public-sector legislation. Schools process sensitive information such as assessments, disciplinary records, health data, special needs reports, images and digital learning data. Processing must have a legal basis or valid consent where required, serve a defined educational purpose, be proportionate and be secured against misuse. Parents and, depending on age and maturity, pupils may have rights to information, access, correction and limits on disclosure to other authorities or service providers.
