Temporary protection

Temporary protection grants rapid, collective and time-limited residence rights to people fleeing serious danger without full individual asylum decisions.

Temporary protection is an emergency mechanism used when large groups flee war, violence or serious disruption and need swift admission. In Switzerland, protection status may provide residence, accommodation, welfare support, schooling and access to the labour market under specific conditions, while leaving individual asylum claims separate or suspended. The concept is also known in European law, though national systems differ. It is not identical to refugee recognition and usually remains linked to continuing danger in the country of origin.
