Withholding tax
Withholding tax is deducted at source from certain payments, securing tax collection or allocating taxing rights between jurisdictions.
Withholding tax requires a payer to deduct tax before transferring income to the recipient. In Switzerland, withholding mechanisms appear in several contexts, including employment income of certain foreign workers and federal withholding tax on specified investment income. The tax may be final, creditable, or refundable depending on the taxpayer’s status, disclosure duties, and applicable treaty. Internationally, withholding tax often affects dividends, interest, royalties, and service payments, making treaty relief and documentation important.
